25 for 25 Patient of the Month: Greg Hatstat

When Greg Hatstat first exhibited “Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease” symptoms in 1985 at the age of 32, he was an active young man. As the disease progressed, he would often gaze at Longs Peak (one of his favorites) and wish he could climb it. He tried three different times and was met with weather and physical limitations. He finally gave up.
Then in 1999, Greg became part of one of the first groups of Parkinson’s Disease patients to receive Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) under the care of Dr. Rajeev Kumar at the CNI Movement Disorders Center. Through CNI, Hatstat (who lives in Parker) has had access to state-of-the-art treatments and has been under the continuous care of Dr. Kumar. Deep Brain Stimulation does not “cure” Parkinson’s Disease, but it can help in the control of the symptoms.
So, at the age of 59 with a 27 year history of Parkinson’s Disease and so many missed opportunities, Greg Hatstat decided to give it one more try. This time, his team of coaches and helpers included his own doctor! “Dr. Kumar has been so supportive of me reaching this dream that he even said he would climb it with me,” Greg explains.
