What is Your Risk of Stroke?
Calculate Your Stroke Risk
Dr. Don Smith, medical director of the CNI Stroke Program, has
developed a free Personal Stroke Risk Calculator based on results
from the Framingham model. By entering your stroke risk factors
into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, you'll be shown your relative
risk of stroke over the next 10 years.
To calculate your risk of stroke, you'll need to know your systolic
blood pressure, which is the higher number in a blood pressure reading.
Other data you'll enter includes your sex, age, height and weight,
as well as whether you are currently taking medication for high
blood pressure or diabetes, and if you're a smoker or have any history
of cardiovascular disease, atrial fibrillation, or left ventricular
hypertrophy.
The program will then show your cumulative stroke risk over the
next 10 years in a visual graph. It also calculates your ideal body
mass, indicating whether you are underweight, in the ideal range,
overweight, or obese. |
Colorado Neurological Institute Conducts
Individual Stroke Risk Assessments
- Stroke risk questionnaire and computer profiling tool allows a person to
view the impact of multiple risk factors and interventions as related to an
individual’s stroke risk.
- Blood Pressure check and Body Mass Index (BMI) calculations.
- Education of stroke risk factors and stroke symptoms.
- Screening is non-invasive and no pre-preparation required.
- The screening/education takes approximately 30 minutes and is free.
- Call 303-597-1724 to schedule an appointment.
- Location:
- CNI Neurohealth Center

NOTES: You will need Microsoft Excel on your computer to run
the program. Elect to run it with the Macros Enabled, if you want to
print out the risk profile graph. You may need to change your security
settings to run the Macro -- to do so, click on the Tools menu item,
then click on Macros, Security, and set it to Low. You will then need
to close the Personal Stroke Risk file and then reopen the file, for
the new security setting to take effect.
The Framingham Model is used in this risk calculation. It is a Cox proportional
hazards model, based on the multi-decade experience from the Framingham,
Massachusetts risk factor study. The model is powerful but not comprehensive.
Some known risk factors are left out.

Colorado Stroke Advisory Board
Dr. Smith is a member of the Colorado Stroke Advisory Board, a panel
of state-wide stroke experts working to build legislation to propose to
the Colorado State Government to help fight stroke.
The Stroke Advisory Board is part of the Colorado
Cardiovascular Health Program, administered through the Chronic Disease
Section of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The
program is designed to 1) reduce premature morbidity and mortality from
cardiovascular disease and 2) promote healthy lifestyles for all Coloradoans.
Dr Smith is also a member of the Western
States Stroke Consortium (WSSC).
