Dr. Adam Hebb, a CNI Associate, will be giving an invited talk at the 37th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society in Milano, Italy, which takes place August 25th through the 29th. The presentation and paper will focus on a collaborative research study with CNI and University of Denver. Authors include Soroush Niketeghad, MS (Graduate Student in Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at University of Denver), Adam O. Hebb, MD (Neurosurgeon and CNI Associate), Joshua Nedrud, MS (CNI Research Associate), Sara Hanrahan, PhD (CNI Investigator Scientist) and Mohammad H. Mahoor, PhD (Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Denver).

The goal of the study titled, “Motor Task Event Detection Using Subthalamic Nucleus Local Field Potentials,” was to detect the behavior of a Parkinson’s disease patient using only the brain activity recorded from the Subthalamic Nucleus (STN), a common target for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) therapy. This study brings us one step closer to creating the next generation of DBS systems for Parkinson’s disease that may be able to detect a patient’s behavior and automatically adapt the stimulation settings for improved symptom control and minimized side effects.
