Patient Clinics, Education and Support
The CNI NeuroHealth Center staff participates in the following monthly interdisciplinary clinics with CNI physicians:
Spasticity /Movement Disorders Clinic
Huntington's Clinic
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Clinic in conjunction with the Rocky Mountain MS Center
Wheelchair seating clinic
Vision Clinic
In each clinic, clinicians meet to discuss the patients and core issues to be addressed in the clinic setting that day. Then patients are evaluated by physicians/therapists. Following these evaluations the clinicians again meet to formulate a plan of care which is presented to the patient/PCG for action. Generally, prescriptions for medications, follow up therapy or additional medical services are provided that day. Patients need to be available for 1-3 hours depending on the clinic structure.
Research at the Center
Which is more likely to be disabling: heart attack or stroke?
What is the most common cause of long term disability: heart attack
or stroke?
If you answered “stroke” to both questions, you are correct.
Of all the terrible things that can go wrong with the brain, none is
more common than stroke. Stroke is a sudden and life changing illness.
It is by far the most common serious neurologic disease.
3rd cause of death
700,000 people per year suffer a new or recurrent stroke, it is an
average of 1 person every 45 seconds
every three minutes someone dies of stroke
15 percent die shortly after the stroke, and 1 out of 4 stroke victims
will die within one year
Only 10 percent of stroke survivors recover completely
40 percent experience moderate to severe impairments requiring special
care
10 percent require care in a nursing home or other long-term care
facility
14 percent of survivors experience a second stroke in the first year
Meet
Kyle, our CNI Hope Award Recipient, a 12-year-old stroke survivor.
Through grants and donations, the CNI Neurohealth Center provides rehabilitation
services to medically under-insured and noninsured stroke patients. Physical
therapy, Occupational therapy and Speech therapy are provided to help
stroke patients achieve their highest level of function. In addition
to these therapies, the CNI Neuroheath Center provides scholarships
for driving evaluations, purchases small equipment for patients, provides
licensed social works services, neuropsychological evaluations and counseling,
therapeutic massage and financial assistance with neuro-opthamology exams.
Often
resources are exhausted for post stroke patients early in the rehabilitation
continuum. CNI is in a unique position to provide this much needed community
service. The CNI Neurohealth Center makes it possible for post stroke
patients to continue their recovery and achieve independence and reintegration
back into the community.
With the help of funding from the Spalding Community Foundation,
the CNI NeuroHealth Center provides various physical, occupational
and speech therapy opportunities to stroke survivors, especially
the uninsured or underinsured.
Other patient services include: neuropsychological evaluations,
scholarships for driving evaluations conducted at Spalding
Rehabilitation Hospital, therapeutic massage, ophthalmology exams
and access to affordable patient equipment.
Stroke Risk Assessment and Wellness Techniques are available, in
addition to nutrition, stress management, smoking cessation, and
24-hour blood pressure monitoring.
Dr. Don Smith, CNI Stroke Center Medical Director, and Dr. Carol
Greenwald, CNI Research Manager, are conducting a number of stroke
research projects, including the ProFess Study, a four-year study
on the prevention of second strokes in patients. This world-wide
study will enroll more than 15,500 patients within 90 days of their
original stroke.
Community education and outreach funded by a grant from HealthOne

CNI was one of the 7 charities chosen to
benefit from the Denver Marathon held Sunday, October 15. Besides the
12 runners and walkers pictured here – CNI had two relay teams
competing, thanks to Blue Sky Neurology. We raised approximately $10,000
for the CNI NeuroHealth Center. Thanks to all who competed, those who
helped with donations, and the proud CNI water station volunteers!
Mile-Hi MicroSurgical Teaching Laboratory
The CNI NeuroHealth Center is home to the Mile-Hi MicroSurgical Teaching Laboratory. Underwritten by a grant from the Mile-Hi Sertoma Club, the Lab provides:
Nine microsurgery stations for physicians’ surgical training
Training to physicians from all over the world by CNI surgeons, with a special grant from Cochlear Americas for training in cochlear implants.
Closed-circuit TV connections to operating rooms at Swedish Medical Center.
This microsurgical teaching facility is one of the most advanced of its kind in the world. Nine teaching stations allows physicians from many different specialties to learn and refine innovative surgical techniques. The lab continues to be the site of international training courses for professionals from North and South America seeking to learn advanced cochlear implant surgical techniques.
The Mile-Hi Sertoma Club MicroSurgical Teaching Lab is available for a wide variety of training courses. If you are interested in taking a tour of the lab or renting it for a class, contact Ellen Belle at EBelle@TheCNI.org or (303) 806-7421.
