Center for Hearing, |
The
CNI Rocky Mountain Cochlear Implant Center is the region's largest and
most comprehensive cochlear implant program. The Center's goal is to improve
sound detection and communication ability for both children and adults
who suffer from severe to profound hearing loss. The professionals at
the Center realize use of this technology is one option available to patients,
and is a choice made by each individual patient. The Center's team approach
assures that each patient's care is thorough and comprehensive, from initial
evaluation to rehabilitation.
The Center officially opened as a program of the Colorado Neurological Institute in 1995, with many team members coming to the Center from the Denver Ear Institute, a non-profit cochlear implant center that operated from the 1970's until 1995 when it was forced to close due to financial hardship. The Denver Ear Institute was instrumental in establishing the basis for a strong team of committed professionals.
Under the leadership of Medical Director, David C. Kelsall, M.D., the team consists of the most experienced professionals in the Rocky Mountain region, with over 600 patients treated by the team members. Team members include fellowship-trained neurotologist, audiologists, speech-language therapists, auditory-verbal therapists, and administrative support. A network of other health professionals is also available when necessary to meet an individual patient's needs.
The Center offers cutting-edge technology and is a major research facility for the development of current cochlear implant devices. The Center also serves as a training facility for physicians from North and South America who are learning cochlear implant surgical technique with the Mile-Hi Sertoma MicroSurgery Teaching Lab.
The field of cochlear implants is very dynamic in that there is constant effort to improve the technology. The CNI Rocky Mountain Cochlear Implant Center has been involved in cochlear implant research since its conception, and is the largest cochlear implant research facility in the region. The Center has been, and continues to be, a clinical research site for numerous FDA clinical trials. The advantage of this has been that patients are assured of receiving the most up-to-date technology. The commitment to research is strong, and this will continue well into the future.
