Facts About Headaches

  • Headache is a common problem. In fact, it is unusual for someone not to have at least an occasional "normal" headache.

  • The most common headache causing dysfunction is migraine type headache.

  • Migraine headache affects 18% of women and 6% of men.

  • Each year Americans miss 1 million days of school and 150 million days of work due to headache.

  • Migraine headache implies a moderate to severe recurring headache.

  • Migraine symptoms can include throbbing, light and noise sensitivity, nausea or vomiting, and confusion.

  • In the last several years, we have markedly increased our understanding about the chemistry of migraine and other types of headache.

  • There is a multitude of new treatments for headache.

  • In spite of our new treatments, 57% of migraine sufferers use only over-the-counter medications for headache management.

What is a Head Pain Clinic?

A Head Pain Clinic is a clinic devoted to the treatment of head pain and face pain.

Team members typically include a neurologist, nurse practitioner, and associated medical practitioners such as physical therapists, psychologists, biofeedback therapists, and dentists.

Treatment consists of diagnostic evaluation, assessment of dysfunction, and treatment strategies.

Partnering with the patient is the foundation of a successful treatment plan.

Education is a crucial part of treatment.

Research studies are in progress to develop new and better treatments.
