Clinical Research

At the CNI Epilepsy Center, we continually monitor new research and participate in clinical studies that might lead to advancements in treatments for patients with epilepsy. This section of our website will keep you informed of these new activities and ongoing educational programs for patients, families and healthcare professionals.

The CNI Epilepsy Center's team of experts includes physicians, nurses, psychologists, physical therapists and pharmocologists. Our experts can answer a wide variety of questions regarding the CNI Epilepsy Center, treatments, epilepsy surgery, seizures or drug studies.

Clinical Research

We are working to improve the quality of life for people with epilepsy by testing new treatments as they become available to patients. These treatments include both experimental drugs and new technologies. Often, they are in the final stages of development and are not yet available to the general practicing medical community. These new treatments can be used only at sites specially selected to participate in clinical trials. The CNI Epilepsy Center has established a reputation as a regional site for nationally conducted clinical trials.

Why conduct a clinical trial? Before a new treatment can be approved for public use, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that the treatment be tested. Clinical trials provide a controlled scientific way of testing new treatments for safety and effectiveness.

Such studies offer patients cutting edge treatment alternatives now that could lead to an improved quality of life. They also help other people with epilepsy who may benefit from these new scientific breakthroughs in the future.

The benefits of participating in a clinical trial usually include free office visits and testing, free medication, access to leading epilepsy experts, and access to new medications.

Patients who agree to participate in research studies are responsible for keeping all office visits, taking medications as instructed, and maintaining any necessary records.

There are risks associated with any medical procedure or medication, whether it is currently on the market or part of a research study. Specific risks must be discussed with your doctor. It is possible to experience unforeseen and undesirable reactions that may be severe or even life threatening. It is usually necessary to monitor patients closely through regular office visits, blood work, and medical tests.
