Welcome to The HeartStrings Project
-- a special offering from the CNI Center for Brain
& Spinal Tumors, which began in February 2000.
Hearing the diagnosis of "brain tumor" is a shocking experience,
one that can leave you feeling frightened and alone. Few others know what
it's like to have a brain tumor or for a loved one to undergo treatment.
That's where the HeartStrings Project can help, by connecting you with
people who know what you're going through. Hence the reason why
HeartStrings was started.
If you're ready to be part of the CNI Heartstrings Project or for more
details, send an e-mail or call
the CNI Center for Brain & Spinal Tumors at (303) 806-7420.
Support is offered in several ways:
- The Buddy System matches patients, family members and friends
with volunteers who have been through similar experiences and are available
to share their stories, lend an ear, offer friendship, support, compassion
and reassurance. For example, an astrocytoma patient would be matched
with another astrocytoma patient, or with a patient similar in age or
treatment plans, a mother with a mother, a brother with a brother, etc.
- Waiting Room Visits: Sometimes it's nice to know you're not
alone, especially during the long hours waiting during brain surgery.
A HeartStrings volunteer, with a care package of cookies, will stop
by the surgery waiting room at Swedish Medical Center, just to pass
the time, hold your hand or talk if you feel like it.
- Meal Preparation and Delivery to help families for a few weeks
with meals while the patient is recovering from surgery. Initially this
program will be offered to out-of-town families who stay at the Craig
Apartments next door to Swedish Medical Center. As the program develops,
meal provision will be extended to Metro Denver families.
- Household Help that may be needed while the patient is undergoing
surgery. For example, shoveling snow, gathering mail, watering plants,
feeding pets, etc.
Therapy Throws
Do you knit, crochet or quilt, or do you know someone who does?
We're looking for you! These special talents can be used to benefit brain
tumor patients. The Center for Brain & Spinal Tumors at the Colorado
Neurological Institute could use your skills. We're accepting your handmade
(machine washable and dryable) blankets and will present them to new brain
tumor patients.
