CNI has been helping patients who are living with complex neurological disorders take countless steps forward for nearly 20 years. Ranging from improved cognitive abilities to reduced pain to improved mobility, these steps are often life-changing for our patients and their families. For some, they represent the first signs of progress toward recovery. For others, they offer a renewed sense of hope for what is possible. At CNI, we believe every step represents a defining moment for our organization.

How We Make A Difference

CNI is organized into virtual specialty centers that are focused on the comprehensive care, research and education of specific neurological illnesses and injuries. Each brings together multi-disciplinary teams of neuroscientists and other medical specialists who work together to provide the advanced resources, expertise and comprehensive care necessary to treat patients with these complex disorders. In addition, these teams work together and in partnership with local and national organizations to advance research, education, outreach and outcomes reporting efforts to ensure that all patients, including under-insured and uninsured individuals, receive the most cost-effective and highestquality care available.

Since its founding as a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization in 1988, the Colorado Neurological Institute has earned a reputation as a world-class facility, offering patients access to innovative clinical trials and new surgical techniques. CNI physicians treat adults with neurological disorders and adults and children with hearing loss and ear disease. . See listing of CNI Member Physicians.

CNI's talented professionals are involved in exciting new research and treatments for Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and other movement disorders, epilepsy, brain tumors, spinal cord injuries, hearing disorders, stroke, Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS), sleep disorders, migraines, neuromuscular disorders, and many more illnesses.

More about the Colorado Neurological Institute

The concept of the Colorado Neurological Institute grew out of the vision of a few dedicated members of the medical community who shared a commitment to excellence in the care of neurological disease and disorders. Neurosurgeons, neurologists and rehabilitation specialists at three hospitals -  Swedish Medical Center, Spalding Rehabilitation Hospital, and Craig Hospital - established a goal of developing a program for every neurological disease. In addition to patient care, each program would offer research, education, and methods to measure outcomes data to prove that patients were getting the most cost effective and highest quality care available.

In 1988, they formally combined their expertise by establishing a nonprofit organization devoted to providing high-level sub-specialty care in a patient friendly environment, from diagnosis to treatment to rehabilitation and recovery. The creation of CNI meant that patients no longer had to go to other parts of the country to get the best care available. Now, they could get it all under one roof, right here at home.

Today, more than 60 neuroscientists are members of CNI. By joining forces, they realize that their combined efforts can enhance the quality, availability, and cost-effectiveness of the neurological services they provide. Patient Care

The CNI Research Department works towards the advancement of treatment options and capabilities for patients with neurological disorders. Each year, CNI participates in clinical trials of potentially beneficial drugs, surgical treatments and therapies. Such opportunities, which are not available at most health care facilities, often provide patients with the only options for potential improvement of their conditions. This work also contributes to advances in the medical treatment of neurological disorders. In 2005, the Research team conducted more than 30 research projects, including several relating to new potential stroke treatments.

Education

CNI provides educational opportunities for patients, community members and physicians throughout the Rocky Mountain Region through a combination of medical publications, community
education series, professional lecture series and public events.

The neuroscience journal, CNI Review, reaches 4000 physicians in a nine-state region, while our community newsletter, In Touch with CNI, is sent to over 6500 people internationally.

Outreach

CNI provides a valuable link to information and services for rural and outlying communities through outreach efforts that include clinics, consultations, services and educational programs for health care professionals. CNI neurologists and other neurospecialists travel to rural areas throughout the Rocky Mountain Region to conduct specialty clinics and assist with recruitment efforts to secure neurological and neurosurgical support. CNI also offers assistance directly to patients and their families who are far from home through our Patient Assistance Program.

Clinical Patient Outcomes

CNI continuously explores opportunities to enhance our programs and services by monitoring clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, quality of life, cost efficiency and overall quality of the neurological services we provide. CNI is currently conducting ongoing research in brain tumors, epilepsy, movement disorders, strokes and neurovascular surgery. Numerous individual CNI members and affiliates are also conducting research in spine rehabilitation and other disciplines.
