Healthy Living Tips for Individuals with Chronic Neurological Disease

NeuroHealth Center with GuitarStay active—physically and socially
Identify activities you enjoy and participate in them, making accommodations as needed. Follow your bliss.

Don’t let your physical limitations isolate you

  • Phone ahead to find out where accessible entrances are before you go someplace new.
  • Tell people about your difficulty with communication.  They will be more understanding and accepting once they appreciate the problems

Know your limitations
Be as independent as you can be but ask for help when you need it.

Pace yourself
It takes more energy for routine activities when your body doesn’t function normally, so rest and do things in small increments. Save energy for big activities or for the end of the day.

Challenge yourself
Do something new:
Learn a new skill, take a class, take a trip!

Remember to communicate
Your medical condition also affects those you love and live with.  It is important to communicate about everyone’s needs including how they can help you and also how you can help them.

Manage depression
Depression often accompanies chronic neurological diseases.  Talk to your doctor about your symptoms and possible interventions that may work for you.

Be proactive in managing change
As your condition changes it may be beneficial to visit or re-visit a therapist who works with those problems.  Talk to your physician who can best direct you to the appropriate resources, either in an outpatient setting or in your home.
