In July, the CNI NeuroHealth Center hosted Becky Farley PhD, MS, PT for an exciting series of Exercise4BrainChange events. Dr. Farley has been working through her Parkinson Wellness Recovery (PWR!) project to get the word out about advances in both basic and clinical neuroscience that have brought exercise to the forefront in Parkinson's disease management, especially as it relates to optimal brain function and skill acquisition.
Dr. Farley's basic constructs for change include a framework of: Prepare, Activate, Reflect and Motivate. Goals include early intervention with PD patients by participating in physical therapy to develop a good exercise program and build supportive community resources for classes and exercise facilities.
These trainings, which CNI hosted in collaboration with Dr. Farley, were the first offered by the Parkinson Wellness Recovery project outside of Arizona and were co-sponsored by Parkinson Association of the Rockies and the Davis Phinney Foundation. In all, over 100 individuals with PD and their caregivers gathered on Wednesday, July 20 for a community program. On July 21-22, 20 trainers and exercise leaders met with Dr. Farley for training on community classes for individuals with PD. On July 23-24, 27 therapists came together for the clinician training.
