CNI Movement Disorders Center
Patient Care
Treatments & Services
The CNI Movement Disorders Center provides a full range of diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation services as well as a variety of clinical research trials.
Deep Brain Stimulation The CNI Movement Disorders Center works with the CNI William McK. & Marcia N. Thompson Restorative Neurosurgery Program to offer deep brain stimulation (DBS) therapy. The Thompson Center has the longest and most extensive experience performing DBS in the Rocky Mountain region.
Through CNI, DBS therapy is offered frequently to patients with disabling symptoms of Parkinson's disease, tremor and dystonia. We hold a monthly multidisciplinary rehabilitation clinic where all prospective DBS patients are carefully evaluated prior to surgery. All patients also undergo pre-operative cognitive assessment. Each team member meets individually with the patient and family and then the team gathers as a whole to discuss treatment and post-operative care.
Botulinum Toxin Injections Botulinum toxin injections are effective in patients with dystonia, spasticity, and certain types of tremor. The toxin reduces the strength of muscle contractions, which can cause abnormal movement and pain for those suffering from these disorders. Injections are performed daily at the CNI Movement Disorders Center by Dr. Kumar along with Dr. Karen Theriot.
Subspecialty Clinics
- Huntington's Disease Clinic – Multidisciplinary Huntington's disease clinics are held once or twice per month for patients with symptoms of Huntington's disease. Our Huntington's disease team includes neurology (Dr. Kumar), psychology (Dr. Diana S. Bowling), genetic counseling (Kristi Marky), social work assistance (Kristi Shaffer), patient education, and physical, speech and occupational therapies. The center offers care to patients at all stages of the disease and genetic counseling and testing to family members at risk of HD.
- Spasticity – Patients with severe spasticity are seen in a collaborative manner by Dr. Kumar, Dr. Theriot, and the CNI NeuroHealth Center. A holistic care plan is developed and may include oral medications, botulinum toxin injections, homebound or outpatient physical therapy and occupational therapy, intrathecal baclofen pump implantation, and bracing or splinting.
Patient-Centered Research The CNI Movement Disorders Center is involved in many clinical research studies for Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases. We are a research center for both the Parkinson Study Group and Huntington Study Group, making us a destination of choice for many patients with PD and HD. Learn more about our research.
Cognitive and Behavioral Evaluations The CNI Movement Disorders Center provides comprehensive neuropsychological testing and treatment of individuals with cognitive and/or behavioral problems related to their movement disorder.
Rehabilitation Therapy The CNI NeuroHealth Center provides outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy services delivered under one roof by neuro-trained therapists. Located within a few steps of the CNI Movement Disorders Center, the CNI NeuroHealth Center offers a number of therapies and clinics for patients with movement disorders, including those struggling with gait problems, fine motor control, voice and swallowing problems, stiffness, and visual difficulties.
Education & Outreach Patient education starts at the initial consultation with personalized information regarding the particular condition. Many patients and families receive an individualized education session. Additionally, the Movement Disorders Center regularly hosts well-attended patient education biannual symposia on Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases.
The CNI Movement Disorders Center is equally committed to medical education. The team regularly holds educational presentations for physicians and allied health care professionals on state-of-the-art care. These presentations are held throughout Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region.
