Outreach & Support

World Hearing Network

World Hearing Network is an international volunteer organization of physicians and medical professionals dedicated to helping to alleviate hearing loss and diseases of the ear worldwide. Established in 1989 and now under the guidance of David C. Kelsall, MD, Medical Director of the CNI Center for Hearing, World Hearing Network has sponsored nearly 25 missions to developing nations including Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Vietnam, Honduras, Mexico and Jamaica.

The mission of World Hearing Network is to help alleviate hearing loss and diseases of the ear worldwide by empowering local doctors and audiologists and transferring state-of-the-art medical knowledge, training and tools. Services provided include:

  • Medical/surgical training
  • Audiological training
  • Education
  • Diagnostic equipment
  • Referral services
  • Hearing aids and batteries
  • Immunizations
  • Research assistance

As part of the CNI Center for Hearing, World Hearing Network is supported entirely by private contributions and corporate partnerships. The physicians, audiologists and other professionals are not paid. Each member of the volunteer missions donates his or her time freely in the hopes that their effort will make a profound difference in the lives of the people they touch. Click here or on the green donate button to the right if you are interested in supporting the program.

The Need

World Hearing Network - SurgeryEstimates tell us that over 400 million people throughout the world suffer from hearing loss. More than 166 million of them are children. Although many of their problems are treatable or correctable, most of these children will never hear the loving sound of a parent's voice because they live in a country where adequate medical and audiological services are not available. The hearing of a great many of these children can be preserved or improved through early infant identification, immunizations, medical or surgical intervention, education, or use of hearing aids.

Making a Difference

In some developing countries, people who are hearing impaired are perceived as physically or mentally deficient. Some cultures see them as nothing more than a financial liability. A young child may be rejected by his family, and face a future of begging, subsistence living, starvation or even death. World Hearing Network provides education, corrective medical services and support, allowing many hearing impaired people to live more productive and fulfilling lives. In cooperation with government officials and doctors in the countries they visit, World Hearing Network sets up clinics, trains local health professionals, performs surgeries, provides hearing aids and leaves behind advanced medical equipment.
