Meet Our Team
David C. Kelsall, MD, Medical Director
David C. Kelsall, MD, is Medical director of the CNI Center for Hearing and the CNI Rocky Mountain Cochlear Implant Center (RMCIC). Dr. Kelsall is a graduate of Stanford University and earned his medical degree at the University of Colorado. After serving residencies in general surgery at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver and in otolaryngology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, he completed his fellowship training in otology/neurotology/skull base surgery at the Denver Ear Institute. Dr. Kelsall is board certified in otolaryngology, a fellow in the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, a member of the American Neurotology Society and the Colorado Medical Society, and serves on the CNI Board of Directors.
As a researcher, Dr. Kelsall has played a role in clinical trials leading to FDA approval of several cochlear implant models and the Vibrant Soundbridge implantable hearing aid, and has established CNI as a regional training center in cochlear implant surgery for physicians from North, South and Central America. As Medical Director of the World Hearing Network, he leads a team of volunteer physicians on annual missions to third world countries, where they perform surgeries, provide hearing aids, and train local physicians. In 2001, Dr. Kelsall established the internationally renowned CNI Cochlear Kids Camps, which are offered each year to children with cochlear implants and their families. He also created and directs several other community outreach programs, including the Cochlear Implant Assistance Program, the Baha Assistance Program, and the CNI Teen Thing.
Allison Biever, Au.D, CCC-A Allison Biever received her undergraduate degree from the University of Alberta and a master’s degree in audiology at the University of Colorado. In 1992, she began a clinical fellowship at the Denver Ear Institute, where she worked extensively with their cochlear implant program. As a clinical audiologist, her focus since 1997 has been with the Pediatric Cochlear Implant Program. Allison completed her Au.D. at Central Michigan University with a thesis on the impact of residual hearing on cochlear implantation.
Katie Breithart, Au.D, CCC-A Katie Breithart received her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology in December of 1996 from Colorado State University. She obtained her Master of Arts degree in Audiology from the University of Northern Colorado in May of 2000. As a Cochlear Clinical Fellow in 2000-2001, she worked under the supervision and training of Dr. Allison Biever at the CNI Rocky Mountain Cochlear Implant Center. As a clinical audiologist, she has been involved in various aspects of the cochlear implant programs, working with children and adults, and in the operating room during cochlear implant surgeries. Katie is an active research co-investigator for various RMCIC studies.
Nancy Caleffe-Schenck, M.Ed., CCC-A, Cert. AVT Nancy Caleffe-Schenck is a certified audiologist, Teacher of the Deaf and Auditory-Verbal therapist. She received her master's degree from Pennsylvania State University and continued her post-master's work at the University of Denver. She has more than twenty-five years of experience in teaching children who are deaf to listen and speak. She encourages parents to integrate listening into their deaf child's daily experiences. She trains and supervises students and professionals, and lectures and consults for schools and clinics internationally.
Nanette Thompson, M.S., CCC-SLP, Cert. AVT Nanette Thompson is a speech-language pathologist and an auditory-verbal therapist. She grew up in Louisiana and received her master’s degree from the University of Texas. She has been working with children who are deaf/hard of hearing for more than 15 years. She has worked in Houston at the Center for Hearing and Speech and in Dallas at the Callier Center for Communication Disorders. She lived in the United Kingdom and established an early intervention program for children with hearing loss and developed an aural rehabilitation program for children with cochlear implants. She has lived in Denver for eight years and works for the Colorado Home Intervention Program, the Listen Foundation and the University of Colorado.
Johnnie Herman, Patient Care Coordinator Phone: 303.806.6293 Johnnie Herman is the patient care coordinator for the CNI Rocky Mountain Implant Center. She has more than 20 years of administrative experience in the medical profession. Johnnie is the friendly and efficient voice patients hear when they call to schedule an appointment, order supplies or troubleshoot equipment. She also assists in handling matters related to insurance inquiries, payments and referrals.
